I was contacted by the mystery delegate Hunter spoke about and his name is Charlie. He wishes to remain "behind the scenes", as it were and we are honoring that request. In his messages he told me about the history of the name change issue. It should be noted that with some minor differences, his opinions of what happened were inline with what we have published here on this site.
We exchanged some correspondence which looked like a civilized version of the same discussions that went on on our forums and the AirstreamForums . Mostly he expressed the basic ideas as to why a name change would help and I tossed out the points we have as to why it would not work. Charlie did state that in the view of many, they (the Name Change Committee) misinterpreted their charge. The language of the motion at the 2005 Delegates meeting was to "insert the name Airstream in the name of the club". As is all to often the case in the English language the charge could, and was interpreted in two distinctly different ways. On this I agree to a large extent. But with a word like "insert" the job seems simple. Insert the word Airstream doesn't really mean anything more than add that word to the existing name in some way. How that was misunderstood to the point that a whole new name was proposed is beyond me. In fact I would add that there was so much misunderstanding all the way around. It is precisely for this reason that we published every bit of information we could scrounge up on this issue. Of course the more we dug up, the more we hated the name change. The licensing agreement is a big part of that but the issue in general leaves a lot to be desired. the Delegate also mentioned that the Delegates were not really prepared to deal with the proposed name being changed at the last minute in the meeting. Most delegates were given the authority to vote Yes or No on the proposed name but did not know what to do once the name took a new direction. That is also understandable and no delegate should have to take that authority in hand if not directly designated to do so. The Delegate also mentioned that the license agreement posted on the SaveWally site was not the same as the one sent to the unit presidents by Jim Franklin in his information package along with the voting package which the Delegate kept. But in looking further it was observed that there was in fact more than one agreement floating around and the one we posted was the "latest and greatest" of those sent out. the Delegate had discovered that a new version of the agreement arrived as HQ was putting the packages together. End result, this site had one version, the Delegate was looking at another, and other units received still yet another. |
