WBCCI Int. Rally - Madison
« on: July 01, 2009, 09:17:05 AM »

Today is moving day (heading home), and there's still a lot to do.  In year four, what I've finally learned is what all leaders have told me all along...

The intelligence, or smartness of a club, as viewed by those that care to observe, is strictly reflected by an IP's actions.

Just a few years back we had an IP come in that promised to streamline the organization for the future.  We got nothing -- except club conflict #1, the ridiculous notion that spending $25K+ on a name change would do something to enhance this club.

That was followed by an IP that decided we no longer needed to be an Airstream only club, conflict #2.

That was followed by an IP that was obstructionist towards membership efforts to guarantee their own rights to vote.  'Out of Order' became the tagline for this IP's only major accomplishment -- he effectively blocked membership efforts to have their say on how this club is run, having their votes counted, conflict #3.

This year's IP accomplished little towards club modernization.  The IP was both protectionist, trying to preserve old guard ways (all but ignoring 2020 requirements), and had earlier positioned himself to block membership absentee voting (Int. Elections and Amendments).

Region Presidents responded to membership feedback, and together, a few moved, and succeeded in getting absentee voting done.  A few delegates discussed from-the-floor amendments, to fix this amendment (geographical and affiliate requirements), but we all agreed -- get it in the books first, then we'll go back and fix it (far easier to fix it once it's in).  We also let what might be wrong with the new wording of an amendment that specifically allows voting by email or fax (at the local unit only).  Get it in now - fix it later.

This year's IP blocked any and all attempts at open and free elections.  Member's deserve a choice, and who is this IP to say alternative views should not reach the membership?  This IP was elected to I3VP from the floor himself, although that election was not the result of a mere member offering his services -- it was the result of an international leadership campaign to get him elected.  Conflict #4 are the obstructionist and protectionist practices that this IP has taken to block the membership from being informed.

What this year's IP brought us was a devastating financial loss, both operationally, and at our International Rally.  Not happy with adding another issue to the conflicts category, we now we have a new one - crisis #1.  A $57,000.00 operating loss that will be compounded by a projected (from the IP's lips) loss of $40,000.00 to $60,000.00 International Rally.  That's a $97,000.00 - $117,000.00 flushing of club funds, all of which occurred under this IP's watch.

What will the new IP bring to this club?  We're about to find out.  Listen in to the July 5th IBT Meeting.  Tom has but a year to turn this ship around, and the outgoing IP has already indicated that the new IP will likely be dealing with a projected loss in the '09/'10 budget.  This club cannot afford to run a defecit ever.  This club can't afford another protectionist, obstructionist leader.  The July 5th meeting should be the tell of the tape.  We're either going to see aggressive changes and improvements right out of the gate, or prepare yourself for yet another year of losses, on top of losses...

Wishing Tom well.  Hoping he's the right guy...

The elections.  I lost, yet surpassed my hopes.  With an IP determined to hide my candidacy from the membership, block voting continued.  While I'm not doing any analysis here, I suspect even more units block voted than last year.  That fault falls squarely in the IP's lap -- obstructionist, and protectionist with regards to international elections.

2008 - 1,580 votes

2009 -- 1,702 votes

and where word is getting through, changes are happening.  0 votes from the Georgia Unit in '08.  More than 150 in '09.  Many units are showing that some discussion is taking place, even if only represented by a single vote for a from-the floor candidate.  Improvements -- many...

I'm declared and running for the International Nominating Committee for 2010.  Choice is goal number one.  Seeing a super majority of units casting mixed votes is goal number two.  Getting elected is goal number three.  There's no shame in running, there's no shame in losing.

If your unit has had enough, consider getting nominated for IP next year by your local unit.  The only way any unit can voice their dissatisfaction with club leadership is to act.  If your nominated unit member is not publicized club wide -- they'll have zero chance of being elected (trust me on this one).  With multiple candidates running, units with abstentions will turn into split votes for the IP.  There simply is no other way to send a message to the top.  If you don't all make a little noise, club leadership will ignore the message...

On my last day in Madison, I happened to sit at a table at the Region 2 Luncheon which included Don & Janice Clark.  Don had just been elected to become our I3VP.  I've spoken with Don and Janice in the past -- they both seem like very nice people (as near everyone I've ever met in the club, previous exceptions taken ;) ).  We all tried to keep away from shop talk, but Don assured me that this group of four ('09/'10 IP through I3VP) are very interested in making sure that members know that this club is the member's club, and not the leadership's club.  Don stated that all FOUR from this leadership group heard the applause that followed Peter Ferguson's statement that all IBT Seminars and Meetings must fall within the official confines of our International Rally.

What Peter wasn't aware of (and will be shortly) is that a proposed amendment has already been drafted and approved (approved wording, not endorsement nor implementation) by our Constitution and Bylaws Committee Chairman.

If you believe, as many of us do, that official club business meetings must be held in the presence of our membership at the International Rally, please make sure that the proposed amendment below goes forward at your unit, and up through your region.  Also, it is very important that we begin to use and exercise our Section 1 amendment procedures and rights.  Common sense amendments like this one should easily pass:

"ARTICLE XVI
AMENDMENTS

Sec. 1   Proposed amendments to this Constitution may be submitted to Headquarters in writing by any chartered Unit of the club. Any such amend ment(s) shall bear a certification by the Unit President that it has been approved by a majority vote conducted in accordance with the Unit's Constitution and Bylaws. The proposed amendment(s) shall also bear a certification by the President of the Region of which the originating Unit is a part, that the amendment has likewise been approved by a majority of the Units within that Region. Upon receipt of the proposed amendment(s) bearing the required certifications, Headquarters shall distribute copies to the Presidents of all other chartered units for ratification or rejection. When two-thirds of the club's chartered Units have ratified the proposed amendment(s) by majority votes according to their Constitution and Bylaws and the Unit Presidents have so certified to Headquarters, such amendment(s) shall be deemed to be adopted. If two-thirds of the Club's Units do not ratify the proposed amendment(s) within one year following the distri bution to the Unit Presidents, the proposed amendment(s) shall be deemed to have been rejected and to be of no further effect. (6/30/93)

Download the attachment below, get it to your unit leadership now, get it to all of the other Unit Presidents in your region.  Get it passed at your unit's fall business meeting, and let's put the membership back in charge of this club!

Leo, why not include the words "and the By-Laws" after the word "constitution" ppears in the proposed amendment above.

It is noted that the current constitution states that the IBT has "administration" over the By-Laws but does not say that the members can not amend them. so lets clairfy the whole mess now.

It is noted the the current constitution states that the membership controls the activities,... so lets make sure that right is in the members hands.

Re: WBCCI Int. Rally - Madison - LOSING $103,000.00+
« Reply #8 on: December 14, 2009, 03:58:09 PM »

INTERNATIONAL MADISON RALLY LOSSES $103,000.00+  Just a tad over the $40K - $60K the IP projected in Madison.  Must have been one of those fuzzy math calculators.

There was a gasp in my section when a projected $40K - $60K rally loss was tossed out there during the IBT Seminar.  I'm guessing there would have been a lynching had we been told the truth.

Imagine signing a contract forecasting a 20% growth in attendance while sitting in Perry two years prior.  When is the last time an International Rally GREW 20% in two years?  $103,000.00+ folks, and that's on top of what, (going from memory) a $44,000.00+ 2009 operational loss -- racking up 2009's single year of club mismanagement to the tune of nearly $140,000.00+!

WOW -- absolutely UNBELIEVABLE.  Now let's swallow an $81,000 operational loss for 2010, and seeing as both the 3 amp section and generator sections have been eliminated from the Gillette rally, take another plunge (currently at ONLY 475) in attendance this year.

We've had it folks -- game, set, match.  This club can't afford this kind of leadership anymore.  YOU do something about it now, or the only place this club is going is the history books -- as defunct and out of business.

Wait until you see the sacrifices this group is willing to take in the coming year -- a mere pitance with absolutely ZERO regard for the membership or the future of this club.  Proposed Amendments coming online tonight...  Stay tuned...

A possible helping factor may be that Tom Collier has signed no attendance guarantees at Gilette.  That is what did Jerry Larson in.  Gilette may be small, but at least we will not be paying for empty sites.  This came to me from out International Treasurer Saturday.

I ruffled some feathers by including the travel expenses in my last unit newsletter.  I have been told by several "higher ups" that I am being negative.  Sorry!  I fully believe that as a unit President, it is my duty to let the members of my unit know what is occurring in their club and I intend to do just that.  The Madison loss will be in my next newsletter, coming out in a week to 10 days.

There may be no attendance guarantee, but they still need 700 to breakeven on the budget which was prepared.

Don’t worry; rumor has it that many on the IBT/EC7 know lots of politicians in Washington, DC and are currently lobbying for a Government Bailout of the WBCCI in the amount of,

$261,000.00

People, that’s over a quarter of a “MILLION” dollars in less than a year.

I can only hope, past and present IBT members plan to leave the WBCCI lots of “CASH” when they die in their wills!!

I just can not believe this!
