LIVE from Bozeman - The WBCCI International
« on: June 28, 2008, 08:54:58 AM »

I arrived yesterday afternoon ~4pm.  Turns out Hunter Hampton and I were on the same last leg from Denver, CO.

The parking areas are pretty far apart, so when the buses aren't running, it requires an ENORMOUS amount of walking to hop from one area to the next.  I was fortunate enough to be offered the use of a Segway for most of the day by incoming Region 1, 2nd VP, Dan Durieko and his partner Bob Butler.

What a BLAST a Segway is!  The simplicity of a Segway is amazing - it just works!  You're standing on two wheels side by side with no apparent means of balance.  The hi-tech electronics complete with gyroscopes really defy what you would think is possible for personal transportation.  Thanks Dan & Bob -- at 100lbs a Segway is on my 'must have' International list.

A 4-day bike rental is $120 -- a little insane considering a car can be had for nearly the same price.  I'm off to solve this transportation issue - I'm going to go look at the bus schedule now.  I don't believe they were running yesterday.

There's a GREAT group here as always, and the word that has to go back first and foremost is that everyone is having a blast.  Tim (Simon) & Kimber are here until Sunday.  It's been two years since we've been together - it's great to see them both. Sorry YOU couldn't be here.  It's many of the same people I've seen in both Salem & Perry.  Everyone is truly happy to meet again, and there's always an endless group of Airstream owners to meet for the very first time.  SMILES are everywhere!  ;D

The vintage parade had 83 Airstreams in it and went on for a very long time.

The general consensus last night was that all the various happy hours will be going on until July 5th!  GET here, or be square! :D

No update on the grievance filed against Bob Thompson.  Last I heard on the 24th IBT Seminar recordings, now all online, was that the grievance committee 'hoped' to have that resolved this week.  Don't count on it.  Bob should the 30 days due him according to our Blue Book.  Franklin, being a third party to this incident should withdraw the grievance.  From the talk on site yesterday, if this grievance stands there could be dozens more grievances filed club wide.   Now that  3rd party grievances are allowed, a number of members I talked to last night talked about filing grievances on a surprising number of topics and actions, and Int. leadership, both past and present, will be the targets.  When in Rome...

So, I'm off for the day.  No pics yet - still have issues to solve, a special event to work out (mostly done) and many things to go see and do.  Airstream presentation in 1 hour, oh, and I still need to register -- where's your ribbon?"   :D

 ;D Hope you're having fun in Bozeman!

Have you had a chance to talk directly to Bob Thompson? Please tell me he demanded a hearing. I assume at the very least that Bob got a copy of the complaint against him. But you could demand a copy of the complaint yourself from the Pres. invoking the Freedom of Information Act. ;) And while your at it, find out which State's Rules of Evidence the E&G Comm. plans to use at the hearing, or if they are planning on using the Federal Rules of Evidence. :-* While they're busy figuring out how to not answer you, Bob can craft his Motion to Dismiss before any "hearing" takes place. This Motion will have to be repeated by Bob with the Executive Comm. notwithstanding even a favorable determination by the E&G BOYZ because the EC can decide to railroad Bob all by themselves according to the club's Bylaws.  ::)

Sorry folks.  I'm up at 6am, out before 7am, and getting back to my room by 12-1am every night. Having a GREAT time here and meeting more and more people every day. I've got a LOT to report about, but can see I'm getting zero computer time here.  I'm also unable to add a dvorak keyboard layout to any of the univ. comps., so it's a two fingered brawl with tons of typos.  Here it is:

I3VP, 6050 votes total.  4851 vs 1199 - Barry wins - Bob gets to run again next year!!

INC:

11932 votes cast = 11,932

Poast = 4,776
Risher = 4,238
McFadden = 1,328
Garvey = 1,590

Lots of problems with these votes, particularly with regard to the incorrect ruling provided by the CBL Committee, but nothing that could have changed the end result.  So, we've got a ~1500 base to work with, an we'll see how much we can grow that number in '09 as I'm running again!   ;D

What's more interesting to note than anything, is that the group of like minded thinkers here is growing, and they're willing to back anyone that comes forward with a PLAN.  Off to INC in '09!!

Mist - I'm late - gotta go.  Nothing more on the grievance.  Nothing will happen with it here.  Stay tuned!!!  ;D

Finally -- a Dvorak keyboard layout.  I was sick and tired of hunting and pecking on QWERTY.  Most University's and open hotel computers keep you from making any 'settings' adjustments.  When I can, I always add the dvorak layout, it's the only thing I can type on.  As they say, there's no place like home...

I'm working on duplicating the voting results and I'll get that posted soon.  As soon as I have that done I'll post the pdf here, completely color coded, etc...  I'm working on it now, so I'm going to hold back on commentary until I can get it online and we can all follow along...   :D  Hang in there -- I'll be back with this...

So, somewhere on here I made mention of a 'special event.'  Bob Thompson, Pat McFadden and I decided there were enough uncommitted votes, units sending their Delegates without a final determination.  We decided we needed to have a 'happy hour' where they could come, meet us all, and hopefully reaffirm any thoughts that they might have had about casting votes for candidates versus nominees.

Dan Durieko and Bob Butler hosted the happy hour and helped me get this together in every imaginable way.  The biggest thing they did, was offer for me to take their Segway (oh what a feeling!) on a daily basis.  The parking areas were so spread out, and during peak hours, the bus frequencies plummeted, no way to get the word out.  The Segway allowed me to get from parking lot to parking lot, but not trailer to trailer.  I should also mention, deliveries started Saturday evening, but most of them were actually done Sunday morning, starting at about 6:30am!  :o

We (I had some help from those that would rather not be mentioned) put 1/8th page invitations, taped to windows adjacent to Airstream entry doors, in message pouches, and on the tow vehicle driver's side windshield wiper.  They were bright yellow -- really hard to miss.  Here's the text of the invitation:

Come One, Come All, Come on Out to
MEET THE CANDIDATES
This is your best opportunity to meet all three candidates running from the floor at the Delegates Meeting.
Find out why they're running, what they have to offer, and why the only way the WBCCI will ever grow is to have run-off elections every single year.
Location: Blue 1, Row 6, #29072
Date & Time: June 29th, 4pm - 5:30pm

I had thought we had covered EVERY parking lot, but we never did get to the G section, and a smaller section I found much later, out by the Student Union Bldg.  Still, more than 600 invitations were hand delivered to each in every Airstream in at least 7 separate lots.  I, for one, had BLISTERS on my feet!

Obviously we had no idea just how many people would show.  We were ready for up to 75 people and we weren't all that far off.  A few showed up as early as 3:30 to ask some questions because they couldn't make our 4pm soiree.  Many stayed as late as 6:30pm.  We guessed that from start to finish more than 50 people had come through to ask quesitons, listen to answers, and hear some overall statements from the three of us.  What those that came got, was a whole lot more.

The number of RED badges (Region Officers) was HIGH.  All of Region 2 showed up -- completely and totally unexpected -- and both Don and Phil spoke to club  issues.  If you're not familiar with Don McKelvay, you should be.  Don has been a real member advocate, trying to work amendments through the IBT that would help individual members and units cast their votes, and fill the chasm that is clearly evident (not perceived) between many IBT members and the general membership.  We had another Region President in attendance and many other Region 1st and 2nd VPs in attendance.  Not at all what we had expected, but I was highly impressed with the amount of support, from Region Officers, that is truly present in this movement.  Of course, we also (and most importantly) had Unit Delegates, that came uncommitted, milling around, asking questions, and getting answers.  You might not think 50+ is impressive based on the number of invitations sent out, but the audience we were hoping to attract were uncommitted Delagates, and we got a WHOLE lot more.  If it weren't in the mid-to high 90's in full sun between two shiny travel trailers, who knows how many others might have braved the weather.

Overall, I think the gathering far exceeded any of our expectations, and contributed to the vote count that took place the very next morning...

Leo,
sorry I could not help better in this area. I was working to get the WDCU Delegate issue resolved and then getting out of Dodge on time.  :o
but glad to hear that it was a success.

No problems Tim -- you were definitely up to your eyeballs -- so was the WDCU and the 4CU.  Pretty unfortunate, but there were two last minute attempts to get them their delegates.  One eventually made it through -- the other got blocked on technicalities, TWICE.  Just a little bit more work for next year and we'll hopefully have a LOT better results.

I still have to do a bit of verification work with this information, but at first glance, here are the units that at least took advantage of the options that were put before them.  Just a single vote for any of the alternate candidates means that this unit was at least savvy enough to make sure that their membership had a choice.

The units that aren't listed?  Either they never got the word that this year there were REAL elections, or, they believe there's some value marching in lockstep with leadership that has provided 30 years of annual membership decline and minimal modernization.  Maybe they really are trying to take the club with them -- to the grave that is.  It's very difficult to believe that a unit with 331 members ALL voted for the slate -- but there you have it...

The full listing is coming soon -- this is just a quick thank you to all those units that found someway to show that competitive elections are important for the mere survival of the WBCCI -- extremely important if we're to ever see growth in this club.
